A girl's got to have a hatbox if a girl is going to have hats! And with all the travel opportunities coming up to attend RHS Conventions, Hoots and Cruises, you've got to have a stylish way to take your hats with you! Why not make your hatbox as personal as you are? The same techniques used in scrapbooking can be used to make a fabulous hatbox. Instructions
Purchase your hatbox. Remove cord handle threaded through to rivets in box. Pay close attention to how it was put together; you’ll have to remember later. A little memory exercise is a good thing!
You can use just about any paper to cover box. Scrapbooking paper and wrapping paper work well. Place lid on paper you have chosen for top of box and trace circumference; cut out circle. Choose favorite photo, and using cropping template, cut opening large enough for image to show through. You may want to embellish edges of opening with glitter. You can also add lettering with marking pen or embossing system. Using craft glue, affix photo to top of box and glue round paper over it. Carefully smooth out air bubbles and wrinkles in paper. Using foam brush, apply several coats of decoupage medium to top of box. Continue to smooth any wrinkles. Set lid aside to dry. Patience is not my virtue, but I have learned you can't finish decorating the lid until the stuff is dry. Measure height and circumference of box; cut paper to fit. You may have to use several pieces of paper to make it all the way around. Glue paper to box with craft glue. Once lid is dry, add beaded trim and small paper flowers around edge with hot glue gun. Don't forget the handle, because a Red Hatter is a girl on the go and her hat needs to come along too. Thread red or purple cord or ribbon back through holes in box to replace cord you removed.
